We have the ideal opportunity for an Interventional Cardiology Fellow looking to gain valuable experience on your road to becoming a Cardiologist. This fixed term, full time position would suit a senior Registrar in Cardiology who wishes to train in Interventional Cardiology.

Christchurch Hospital provides tertiary cardiac services to the South Island of New Zealand. The department has 5 Interventional Cardiologists. It performs over 1000 PCI’s per year and operates a 24 hour STEMI service. It has an active structural heart disease programme.

You’ll have access to state of the art equipment, world class Consultants and gain experience in complex PCI including LM stenting, bifurcations, rotational atherectomy and chronic total occlusions. The department has expertise in intracoronary imaging (optical coherence tomography and IVUS) and physiology.

It is also possible that the successful applicant can gain experience with TAVI and other structural heart interventions although their primary role will be in interventional coronary work.

You’ll be involved in the preparation and performance of interventional procedures, and care of the patient following the procedure, as well as outpatient clinics, research, audit, and database duties.

You will be required to participate in the after hours roster covering cardiology admissions and in patients.

You will have completed your advanced training in Cardiology (FRACP, MRCP (UK) or equivalent) and have been in Specialist Training in Cardiology for a minimum of two years. Competency in diagnostic angiography is a pre-requisite, although extensive previous PCI experience is not required. We are happy to train you. You will be required to be registered within a provisional general scope or special purpose scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

The Christchurch Hospital Cardiology Department provides specialised tertiary level care to Canterbury and the South Island. The department has accreditation for advanced training in Cardiology by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Working in this department with experienced Consultants and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team will give you the opportunity to gain specialist experience.

The fellowship starts immediately and is for one-two years. Those unable to start from this date may still be considered.
